Nora Nohraku Suggs

NORA NOHRAKU SUGGS, shakuhachi, received her Jun-shihan and Shihan certifications from the NYC Kyo-Shin-An dojo of Dai-Shihan James Nyoraku Schlefer, and has also studied with Kurahashi Yodo II and Dr. Riley Lee. She teaches, performs, and records on both shakuhachi and Western flute. She is a graduate of Houston’s Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine, with extensive private education in music and degrees in biology, English literature, medicine, and surgery. She has played in England, Canada, Japan, Italy, Alaska, and throughout the continental United States; and is now active as a teacher, recitalist and chamber musician in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley. Dr. Suggs is the flutist and Artistic Director of the classical chamber music ensemble SATORI, teaches both flute and shakuhachi through her private studio, and has taught at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA, and the Community Music School of the Lehigh Valley. She also performs and records with Two Part Invention, a classical guitar and flute duo. She has recorded two CDs of traditional and contemporary shakuhachi music, and is currently at work on several projects involving shakuhachi and Western instruments, as well as sankyoku trio and solo shakuhachi performances, and a multidisciplinary project based on Japanese stories of the supernatural.
