Lauren Nagaryû Rubin Ph.D teaches shakuhachi in Los Angeles, and specializes in playing honkyoku on chokan, jinashi shakuhachi. She is a student of Alcvin Ryûzen Ramos, and attained the rank of shihan in August 2014. Lauren focuses on musical excellence, breathing techniques, spiritual approach and personal expression with her students and in her own playing. Lauren has her doctorate in Ethnomusicology from the prestigious Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Hawaii and her Masters of Science in Music Technology from Indiana University/Purdue University in Indianapolis. Lauren has been a meditator for over 25 years. She recently published a chapter on Japanese music, and is currently adapting her dissertation into a book about the early history of the shakuhachi and its relationship to Shingon Buddhism. http://laurenrubinphd.com
