Kamiya Hakuzan was born September 29, 1891 in Hiroshima Prefecture to a family in the lumber business. In March of 1908 he was sent to a private school run by his uncle in Osaka. Around the time of his high school graduation he became intensely interested in the game of Go, but the stress of the game led him to trying the shakuhachi. He eventually came across some Tozan-ryū notation and began a period of serious self study, prodded along by a local Tozan study group. Military service temporarily interrupted his studies, but upon his release he returned to Osaka and became a student of Nakao Tozan himself. After his very first lesson, Tozan-sensei was so impressed he immediately gave Kamiya his certificate of completion for his Shoden rank. The rest of his studies went by almost as quickly. Given his initial teacher’s license, he set up instruction centers in the Horie, Toyosaki, and Sangenya areas and began to give instruction. In February of 1919, he took the Jun-Shihan (associate teacher) examination and was promoted to the upper ranks, and was given the name Hakusan. In January of the following year, he was elected as a member of the board of trustees for the second term, and his political talent was demonstrated. Over time, he served as a member of the board of trustees for many years, and has also became a member of the board of directors for several special events. He also appeared in many special exhibitions and served as a member of the examination committee, reaching a level of both technical and artistic mastery. In October 1922, he was promoted to the rank of Shihan (master teacher), and in October 1928 he was finally promoted to the rank of Dai-Shihan, the highest musical rank in the school, and given the title Chikurin-ken.
