Nakajima Kakuzan (Nakajima Shōichi) was born on May 20, 1900 to a farming family in Takami Village, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture, but moved to Osaka with his eldest brother Kotarō's family in June 1915, where he engaged in the family business of wholesale materials for traditional Japanese footwear (geta). In April 1919, he began Tozan-ryū shakuhachi studies under Fujita Shizan. After receiving his instructor's license, he moved to Tokyo with his family in May 1924, where he joined Yasaka Reizan’s classes. After continuing his studies, he was promoted to Jun-Shihan (associate master) in September 1925, and at the end of the same year, he opened his own dojo in Hongo. He later set up a branch in Guangzhou, China. Due to his merits, he was promoted to Shihan in February 1931.
