Born April 8, 1935 in Fukui Prefecture, Takayama Itsusei (Takayama Eiji) studied Itsudō-ha Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Imao Itsuha. He started teaching in 1969. He was a member of the Itsune-kai, the Gifu Kinko-kai, and the Tokai Kinko Rengo Sankyoku Gyoha-kai.
