Kuriyama Yōzan

Kuriyama Yōzan (Kuriyama Sakutarō) was born August 24, 1899 in Kosaka-cho, Nakakawachi-gun, Osaka. He started learning the shakuhachi from Ikoma Na in Osaka, and, in October of 1924, moved to Nagoya to study Tōzan-ryū shakuhachi with Hasegawa Shōzan. In 1927 he continued his studies with Tōzan master Hiratsuka Kōzan I, and in February 1928, he passed the exam to become an associate teacher (Jun-Shihan).
