Kōno Gyōyū (Kōno Gorō) was born May 1, 1934 in Kyoto Prefecture. He was a member of the Kanto branch of the Ueda-ryū and studied under Ryūsen Gyōki. He became a Jun-shihan (associate instructor) in 1971.
