A famous Fuke shakuhachi player from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period, Jinbo Masanosuke was born in Ohashi Village, Echigo, in Niigata Prefecture on June 19, 1841. From around 1867, he stayed at Renpoken, a Komusō temple in Fukushima, for about four years. He was highly regarded as a shakuhachi master and had, through the years, over 70 disciples. His version of the zen piece, Jinbo San'ya, is not only a recognized masterpiece, but it is the only piece of classical honkyoku that exists today that bears the name of an individual, passed down by his disciples Hikiji Kozan and Urayama Ginzan. He was also reknowned for his performances of the classic honkyoku Tsuru no Sugomori.
In 1961, a monument was erected in his honor in Fukushima.
