Shidō KITAYAMA

Shakuhachi
Studied shakuhachi under Kimura Yusai at Keio University. From the 1990s to the 2010s, he was a leading performer of the Araki school. His artistic style is very similar to that of Kimura Yusai, combining dignity and power. He inherited Shidō, the former name of Yusai Kimura, and is the president of the Chikusenkai, which was founded by Yusai Kimura. He exceled in Kinko-ryu honkyoku and sankyoku ensemble playing, and has been broadcast on NHK and recorded on CD. He served for many years as president of the Chikusen-kai and as executive director of the Kinko-ryu Association. He was also a member of Wakaba-kai, Japan's premier sankyoku ensemble group. In 2024, he retired from performing due to ill health and took the name Yusai. Kadō Makihara of Chikusenkai succeeded him and became Shidō MAKIHARA.
