Kotake Kazan

Shakuhachi

Born on June 1, 1893 in Fukui Prefecture, the eldest of six siblings, Kotake Kazan (birth name Jirō) began his shakuhachi studies when he was 20 under Tozan-ryū master Nakanishi Sōzan in Matsuyama City, then with Nakamura Kōzan in Hiroshima, and Kurokawa Shōzan in Tokyo. A year later he moved to Kyoto to study with Ōhashi Kōzan, with whom he completed his Chuden studies. Moving to Fukui City for work, he continued his studies with Ōhashi-sensei at Tozan headquarters in Hirakata.
In February 1921 he was given his Jun-Shihan (associate master) license. The following year he moved to Tokyo, opening his own shakuhachi dojo.
In October of 1925 he was awarded his Shihan (masters) license and given the name Kazan.
