After graduating from the University of the Pacific in 1982 with a degree in International Relations and Japanese, Philip Flavin entered the Seiha Conservatory of Japanese Music in Tokyo to pursue his interest in sôkyoku-jiuta, music for the koto and jiuta shamisen. At the Conservatory, he studied under Nakashima Yasuko, Goto Sumiko, and Miyake Michiko. Graduating with honors, he then continued studying the classical shamisen repertoire under Inoue Michiko and koto under Yuize Shin'ichi. In, 1992, he was accepted to the graduate program at the University of California at Berkeley Music Department to study ethnomusicology. During the 1996-1997 academic year, Mr. Flavin returned to Japan with the assistance of a Fulbright-Hayes to study a comic chamber music under Tomiyama Kiyotaka, one of the last performers of this repertoire. Completing his doctorate in 2002, Mr. Flavin was a visiting scholar at the Kyoto City University of Arts, conducting further research on sakumono with the assistance of the Social Science Research Council/Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Mr. Flavin has performed in numerous venues, including the National Theatre in Tokyo, performances for National Television and Radio, as well as guest appearances throughout Japan and the United States.
