Born in Tokyo in 1937, he studied shakuhachi under his father, Jin Nyodo from the age of 7. He earned his Shihan (masters license) in 1962. Graduated from Waseda University in 1966 and, upon his father's passing that same year, became the presiding officer of the Nyodo-kai.
