Matsuoka Shidō (Matsuoka Toshio) was born October 15, 1933 in Fukui Prefecture. He studied Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Fujiwara Ōdō (Kaneyasu Tōdō lineage). He started teaching in 1962. He was a member of the Kyoto branch of the Japan Chiku-dō Gakkan and the Ō-ryū-kai.
